The Ark retreat center is part of ARK MINISTRIES, INC., a non-profit organization supported by those who use its services, together with donors and friends. It also offers the ministry of spiritual direction and off-site retreat and seminar leadership for church, non-profit, and other groups. Both pledge contributions and special gifts, which are tax-deductible, are welcomed and appreciated.
The Ark is located approximately five miles east of Berea, home of Berea College and a major arts and craft center for Kentucky and the Appalachian region. Situated along Interstate 75, Berea is 36 miles south of Lexington, about 120 miles south of Louisville and Cincinnati, Ohio, and 140 miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee. Director of The Ark and Ark Ministries is Theresa Scherf (M.Div., Ph.D.). An ordained minister in the United Methodist Church for 42 years, she has served inner city, urban, small town, and rural pastorates in the United States and abroad. She has also been a seminary teacher and administrator, a hospice chaplain, has taught adult education courses in numerous settings, and was a visiting professor of religion at Berea College in 1990-1992, where she has subsequently served also in an adjunct faculty role. A speaker and writer, she has had extensive ecumenical and cross-cultural experience, having lived or traveled in Central America, Europe, Africa, and Asia as well as the United States.
